Vegetables in baby food

Vegetables are the first foods introduced during the diversification baby food. But when put on the menu? How much? Which to choose? Follow the guide.

The introduction of fruit and vegetables in meals baby
 will optimize its intake of vitamins C and E and
 beta-carotene or pro-vitamin A.
 It is best to start with vegetables,
 and wait at least 2 weeks to integrate the fruit.
 If the opposite is done, baby may prefer fruits
 because of their sweet taste, and eschew vegetables.

At what age introduce vegetables?

Ideally we introduced vegetables from 6 months and never before 4 months of age.
The tendency is to delay diversification, prevention of food allergies.
Throughout the introductions, your pediatrician will guide you.

 * Entre 5-6 mois et 7 mois.

It provides vegetables for one of the two main meals, usually at noon.
The first day, we add 2-3 teaspoons of cooked vegetables mixed into a bottle of milk, you can also offer this vegetable spoon. Gradually increasing the amount to reach 130 g (the weight of a small pot) to 150 g of vegetables.
It is desirable to introduce vegetables one by one to check the tolerance of baby, while educating its taste. We limit ourselves to the more digestible vegetables: carrots (not too much for constipation), green beans, spinach (not too much diarrhea), skinless zucchini seeds, pumpkin, leek, potato, beet or endive in smaller proportio

*Between 7 and 8 months.

It offers baby vegetables each meal main: 130 to 150 g, mixed with bottles of milk or a spoon. We continue to avoid vegetables taste strong, too irritant (as high fiber), or may cause an allergy. At 7 months, house vegetables, add 1 pat of butter, or better, 1 teaspoon oil (rapeseed, soybean, sunflower) rich in essential fatty acids which complements the use of milk 2 age.

*Between 9 months and 1 year.

 The amount of vegetables per meal served increases to about 200 g. Gradually introducing new vegetables, always with a cooked and mixed or small pieces: tomato paste, artichoke, eggplant, peas, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, fennel, beetroot. They can also sprinkle with herbs: parsley, chives, chervil, basil, or thyme. 

*Between 1 and 3 years.

It keeps vegetables 2 times per day, and introduced vegetables: tomato, cucumber, avocado, lettuce, grated carrot ... 18 months is expected for pulses less digestible lentils, peas, beans, in prepare mashed potatoes.
From 2 years, it is possible that your baby starts to refuse certain vegetables, it is a perfectly normal stage food. Do not force it, but it repropose foods regularly neglected.

Homemade or jars?

You can switch between home-grown vegetables and jars, it is preferable for the education of taste, not used baby one type of preparation. When home cooking, you can use fresh or frozen vegetables. Steaming preserves the vitamins better than boiling. Do not salt the first month, then very slightly from 8 months. Avoid cooking them in fat, it is best to add them in butter or oil raw. You can have confidence in soups, baby food, and snacks for children under 3 years highly regulated: no preservatives, coloring, artificial flavor, very little salt with nitrates and pesticide levels very low. Home cooked vegetables and infant products started to retain up to 48 hours in the refrigerator.

What if my child is allergic (or if there are food allergies in the family)?
1 year of age is expected to introduce celery and peas. Of course, we follow the advice of the pediatrician.
